She is not the same Ashley she was before.

This does not make settling back in any easier.

It makes explaining the appearance of a long dead (in her timeline) Alliance soldier easier, it makes settling Bones in with the Alliance easier, it makes some of the events that somehow still happen easier (fighting alongside Shepard to stop the Cerberus coup is definitely preferable to the standoff in front of the Council Kaidan and the other timeline's Shepard apparently had), but it does not make settling back in as the only squadmate of the Normandy to have served on another reality's time traveling spaceship any easier.

She ends up writing Bones a lot, the varying timezones of the Normandy making it too hard to call. Ironically, they don't even talk about Verdana much, but knowing she could if she wanted to and he wouldn't be staring at his omni on the other end like she has two heads is enough.

There's a new human doctor orientating to Citadel standard medical practice and alien species, Sarah tells her. He doesn't seem to have come across half the equipment nor any aliens beyond salarians and quarians before. His name is Leonard McCoy or something.

Lack of familiarity with aliens could be a sign of growing up on Earth or in the colonies, but not knowing the equipment is surprising in a doctor. Sarah's onto how cute the guy is when the name catches up with Ashley, and she blurts out, "Bones?"

"If he's not boning someone, he should be," Sarah says, without blinking.

"What?" says Ashley. "No. Is he, say, late thirties, brown hair, sarcastic?"

"Yeah, that's him."

Ashley breaks into a smile. "He was one of my friends back on Verdana. Everyone called him Bones. And he's too old for you." Not that she really expects Sarah to rebound after being widowed on her honeymoon, but with the unnecessary mention of Bones's looks, she can't be too careful.

"Aaaah," Sarah intones, and then her smile grows teasing. "Friends, or -" She nudges her. "Friends?"

"Friends," she says, shaking her head with a grin. "The guy I did bone went home. Anyway, Bones is great," she adds before she can be interrogated about her otherworldly sex life, because Sarah tends to swing wildly between eager for gossip and ewwww, my sister's having sex. "Once he's caught up on our tech and alien anatomy, he'll be fine."

"Friends," Sarah repeats thoughtfully. "But he followed you here instead of going home."

She shrugs. She's tried not to think about it. "We actually weren't that close on Verdana," she says. "I didn't ask him why he's here, it seemed personal, but the impression I got was that he didn't have much of a home to go back to and wanted to keep busy."

"This place is definitely busy," Sarah agrees, and Ashley hopes she'll leave it at that, but she still messages Bones that night, Watch out for my little sister - she might be looking for a rebound.

He does her the service of not asking what Sarah would be rebounding from, instead opting for, Oh, am I meeting the family now?

Cheeky. You might have already at Huerta. She's a student nurse. Sarah - red hair, looks nothing like me, probably following an asari around.

I'll keep an eye out so I can stay far away.
